Learning Objectives

  • To engage in an open, honest, and respectful dialogue about the meaning of community, and the goals, problems, and best practices associated with community engagement.
  • To gain a better understanding of the informal arts practices and communities in Eugene.  As a Eugene native and a (very) casual informal artist, I feel oddly disconnected from other artists in this place I call home, and would like to have a better idea of the interests and resources in my hometown.
  • To gain a better understanding of the cultural mapping of Eugene.  As an aspiring folklorist, I would like to be more engaged in the expressive practices of the culture I know best, and am curious about how the skills I have already gained could be of use in my community.
  • To hear from areas of the Eugene arts community that could use improvement (better access, visibility, resources, etc.) and evaluate how those goals might be met.
  • To prepare myself for future endeavors in community arts by examining the history of community arts programming and the current approaches being used to encourage community arts involvement.
